This school is trash, badly maintained, has horrible leaders and staff. They have a huge bullying problem, and you do not get what you pay for.

All the school cares about is your money. They are not interested in resolving any issues. Bullies are not punished, in fact the staff turn a blind eye to it and blame the students for making up stories. The school counsellor is not really a counsellor at all but a glorified wantabe. They believe in punishment before identifying the issues. I have removed my child from the school last year and now I have a child in therapy because of the traumatic experience they were subjected to. I do not recommend this school.

Go to a government school and use the money you would have spent on a great tutor / s. Math teacher year 8 told class 2x2x2 is 6. A kid had to correct them. ??? Regretting choice. Had been to govt schools for primary, no issues.

On the surface the school looks good. The location of the two campuses is visually appealing. I enrolled my child in year 7 last year as I believed it was the best option for us in the area. In hindsight this was not the best decision. My child has made friends and I don't want to move them again. The issues as I see them is a lack of focus on the main academic areas such as math, english and the sciences. The school is very PE orientated with 3 sessions in 2 weeks. A whole day each fortnight for year 8's is dedicated to an area called 'thrive'. Its in the curriculum without parents being consulted. It is a wasted day which could be better utilised to fill educational gaps. This school is not cheap but it doesn't deliver academically. To do well you will need a lot more $'s for tutors to get them through each year in terms of knowledge for the coming year.
The school seems to use its student as advertising. Blazers must be worn to the bus, getting on the bus and getting off the bus in the evenings. That is really the only time they are worn except for large school assemblies. What could be the reason???
The other really assinine thing is the rule to wear summer uniform only in terms 1 and 4. Really in an environment that can get extremely cold during these 2 terms. Surely as long as you wear your formal uniform , winter or summer, completely should be ok to do. It is freezing . Summer dresses do not provide adequate coverage on freezing days in Woodend.
If you have other options as a parent go there.
I have read the reviews on this site regarding the prevelance of bullying . I agree. The school tries to sweep it under the carpet trying to dilute what is going on.
Toilets are social zones in recess periods. Students who genuinely need to use the ameneties have to go to toilets dedicated to other year levels.

This school is the worst school I think in the history of the world.
1. Kids bully others and teachers do nothing about it and I have been one of those kids who have been bullied.
2. The p.e teachers are very excusive I tried out for 3 different sports at braemar and I did not get in once.
3. They tax people on printing.
4. The blazers are super expensive.

I left braemar college at the end of year 11 (2019), after attending since year 7. i was continuously bullied and isolated throughout my entire experience and teachers knew about this and made some efforts to have meetings with the friendship group at the end of year 7, during a meeting, while the whole friendship group admitted to blaming every argument on me because i was the new one to the group, the teachers had nothing to say about it and no further action was taken to help myself. then from year 8 to year 11, i continued to be isolated by mainly one student who the head of senior school knew of and refused to do anything about even after multiple complaints by myself and other students about this one students behaviour.
the councelling that the school recommends to everyone is a piss poor excuse for a support system especially for people with mental health problems. there is no real support system and mentally ill people are dismissed.
the main focus of the school is academics and anyone who isn’t overly academic gets treated like trash by everyone especially teachers if they don’t excel in the subject.
so many of the teachers especially
the careers advisor, are so incompetent it’s not funny. there have been so many mistakes that could have easily been avoided by the careers advisor that has messed many students up, especially the students going to uni who now have to reconsider what they will be doing because of his incompetence.
bullying is not taken seriously, many of the students are just stuck up with rich parents and half the teachers are unprofessional and incompetent.
i do not recommend.

First off, the shittiest careers person EVER, deserves the sack and this is the opinion from every student I know and many staff too. Literally going into uni, got into the course I wanted and because of his lack of effort to properly research for us (cos we’d asked for his help), couple of my friends and I have now found out we can’t even pick the majors we wanted so we’re all stuck. SECOND, not enough counsellors on either campus and a huge bias against mentally ill people despite having this accepting facade and encouraging students to do counselling. Can’t say enough how many people I know who have been mistreated and the bullies have gotten away with it. THIRD, they care too much about academics then neglect other departments, the music department for example. They refused to put more funds into the music department to improve it, which forced the greatest music director the school has ever had to QUIT. FOURTH, i don’t know how they’re interviewing some of these teachers and deciding that they’d suit the role. The school must have been desperate for an English language teacher as she turned out to be the most unprofessional, narcissistic and useless teacher. Didn’t answer her emails from students asking for help, and a combination of her common absence and poor teaching skills forced the poor VCE students to learn material themselves and our ATARs suffered from it. She was rude to a student, and the student called her out for it and her overall negligence towards her students and instead of the teacher being punished or reviewed, the student had to apologise. OVERALL, there are some pros to Braemar College, but the list of cons outways the pros and for the price you pay for, I’d say that some public schools have better support teams and facilities.

I highly recommend Braemar college for anyone hoping to enter the fashion industry. At the hand of head of campus, instead of attending my first period math class I was guided to the uniform shop to purchase the 'correct shade of grey' socks. If it was not for this encounter I would not know the difference between 'light' and 'medium' grey, for this I am very grateful.

There are some exceptional teachers at Braemar College however many of them move on due to an incompetent and unprofessional leadership ‘team’. Those who blame teachers clearly have no idea of the conditions teachers have to work under and are unaware of many poor decisions made over the years which have affected both staff and also students. Teachers are rarely supported by leadership when dealing with difficult students or disgruntled and sometimes abusive parents. This lack of support and confused vision means this is not the school it once was.

I was bullied by the teachers. Such a terrible experience. I was also bullied by my peers for many years and no one cared. I was repeatedly bashed and sat on for many years. Save your money. The campus on Mount Macedon is old and falling down, very dangerous for students. Do not send your children here.

The last great leaders at Braemar College were Marcel Nyeholt, lan Buerkner, Charles Castle and Mrs Clinch. These four leaders together with Mrs V.G ran the school. The last great Educators were Mrs V.G, Mrs Tooley. The last great man of principle as he made himself appear to be was clearly myself. The last great student was Naja Di pilla whos career path was probably more of a reflection of her parents efforts within the home rather than money spent at the school, its setting or its staff. Knowing your childrens strengths and cultivating those abilities and interests at home will yield greater results.
The last great class graduated in 1995.

I’m in year 7 at the moment and the education is excellent. The Woodend campus facilities are great and inside is light, bright, open plan and ideal for learning. I consider myself a high achiever academically and think that Braemar suits my needs well. Whether it will continue to after year 10 i’m not sure.

I went to Braemar from years 7-12 and my overall experience was average. Some of the teachers were incredible and extremely hardworking and really deserved a lot more credit than they were given. The campus itself is so beautiful and some of the activities and opportunities you get are incredible. However, the negatives I experienced are sexism from certain teachers, lack of support for struggling students and lack of VCE subject variety. My friends and I have discussed countless times how Braemar didn't really do anything for us and we have learnt more in our 5 years out of high school then we did in it.
Save your money and send your children somewhere else

Principal needs to be replaced. Do not come to this school.

The principal is a micro-manager and won’t trust staff to do their job. Any great staff ave left or stay 3-4 years then leave.

I've been at this school from 7-10, only good things about it are the new head of senior and that I'm graduating in 2 years. seriously don't come here its awful. the school also has a certain bias towards boys and doesn't focus on real problems for girls and they just don't have any punishments for anyone who misbehaves. I could go on for hours but I think I've said enough. save yourselves and go elsewhere.

Highly overrated. The fees are high and you do not get what you pay for. The money is being used for a new campus. Many high quality staff have left. The worst staff morale I have ever encountered. Avoid at all costs!!

Thank you for the feedback on my school. I, however, do not share your sentiment. The school provides a great deal of opportunity and the students on the whole appear happy to attend and are doing their best, whatever that may be.
There are, like all schools, things that can be worked on and improved and we continue to work on those.

I was very interested to read the reviews above, which were all very accurate from my experience after 3 years at Braemar with two children. There is a very negative vibe with the teachers many of which seem to forget they are working in a private school where, manners, professionalism, consideration, care and high standards of education are expected. The maths support at the lower levels is non-existent, as is the extension program opportunities. It is very much a cattle mentality of run em through and don't complain. There is little encouragement, but plenty of negativity up there. The academic standards and care factor of many (not all) is very disappointing.
It needs a huge overhaul to make it more professional in the way they deliver the education and the quality of teachers. The standards need to be higher but delivered in an intelligent and thoughtful manner to bring the best out in each child. There is two much 'self learning' happening and not enough teaching. Many are leaving the school particularly across the higher secondary levels. We too are now looking elsewhere. I agree, go to Melbourne if you can. The lack of waiting lists speak volumes. Such a beautiful setting with so much potential. Such a shame.

I Attended Braemar College for years 5-8, whilst the primary years were certainly a step up from the local state primary school, there was very few scope for growth in the secondary years. A culture of mediocrity abounds at the college and low standards are set for everything from academic pursuits to sports. Furthermore, the students are far too protected from the outside world and believe that their school is outstanding in relation to other schools. My move from Braemar to Melbourne Grammar School showed me that this was not the case at all. The facilities at Braemar are old and need work and the teaching stuff is overworked and second tier at best. Moreover the school does not appreciate or nurture excellence as it focuses on the mediocrity of the majority. Therefore, though Braemar may be the best school in the Macedon Ranges, I could not recommend it to anyone and would implore parents who can afford it to send their children to a prestigious Melbourne school such as Melbourne Grammar, Scotch College, St Catherines or Melbourne Girls Grammar

I attended this school years 7-8 and was disappointed with the quality of teaching and especially of the music department. The principal does not care for music, and in fact doesn't care for his students. The students of the school are lacking individuality and bully people constantly. Very glad I moved to a school in Melbourne.

Braemar is a good school between grade five and year nine. In further years, there are very few VCE subjects offered, especially in comparison to other schools in the area. The standard of teaching is greatly varied, with some below average teachers as well as some teachers who really go above and beyond for their students.
The music and performing arts at Braemar is particularly lacking, so students interested in such areas should look at other schools. There is only one VCE Music subject offered- Music Performance, and some music teachers are clearly disorganised and seemingly unpassionate about music, and known to tell students to do what they want during classes.

Braemar College has a great community spirit. In my experience students are given a balanced education with many opportunities. They are taught the importance of respecting each other and are involved in many community projects. The principal Russell Deer is very involved in the students well being and is always available to them. I highly recommend this school and am glad we made the decision to send our boys here.
