I am a parent of a current student at Balwyn high this year. In the time my child has been there she has been subject to constant bullying. There is a serious problem with the sub continental students and parents , the school is turning a blind eye or more likely does not know how to handle it.

Is selective schools better than private schools for a self motivated and intelligent child?

Teachers don't teach properly, as all the good teachers have left. They also value uniform and socks more than bullying and other important stuff.

Oh dear, another sad day for Balwyn. VCE results have plummeted again. Median study score has decreased for third year in a row. No wonder, best staff have left or are leaving this year. Guess that’s what happens when good teachers are treated like commodities.

This school has caused my child to get clinical depression. Possibly the worst school ever

As a recently graduated student from Balwyn High, I have received an atrocious ATAR score because of Balwyn High School's horrible education. The teachers were completely unqualified, the counselors were completely swamped with work, and there is nothing being done about the bullying and snitching culture. This school is a disgrace. If you would like to receive a quality education and a bright future, Balwyn High is just not the place for that.

Balwyn High School is possibly one of the worst high schools in Victoria. Regardless of its reputation for being academic and extremely proficient in music, it has completely deteriorated. As an experienced teacher, my professional opinion of this school is that it should belong in the bottom rankings of Victoria. If possible. DO NOT send your child here.

Staff morale is incredibly low. Everyone is leaving and the school can’t attract quality staff. This year alone the school has lost principal PA, business manager, head of senior school, head of international programs, several leading teachers, several senior staff members in key departments like English and Maths. Even one of the ground staff left. Students are overwhelmed with mental health issues and school never tells them it’s OK to be less than perfect. Lack of academic rigour in lessons because junior staff without correct experience are put in positions of authority because they are eager to get out of classroom, and principal can easily manipulate them.

The school has a huge snitch culture in which students cannot even reach out to teachers. From my experience of being bullied several times at this school, when I went to ask for help I was ridiculed and called a snitch. Additionally, some of my friends were being threatened and the people being threatened were the ones who got suspended...HOW IS THAT FAIR? The support system is quite fake and is only put in place to impress the parents.

Kinda disappointing. many people say it's like a private school at a lower cost but its really not. if you have the money just send your kid to a private school...
most teachers are either old people that can't teach or hipster millennials on ster oids...
also a sub one time for humanities kept distracting this one girl from her work and she was really uncomfortable and he was just sitting there talking he wasn't even teaching and everybody was playing games
also a first aid staff literally said "is your dad working in China right now" without knowing anything about the person just they were Asian... like WHAT??? Not all Asians are Chinese or have dads working overseas, that was so rude offensive if she was in America she would be fired by now
also there's no space in the school to put lockers so they put them up against glass windows in the hallways and in really obscure places
also nobody wants to eat outside. like did you know Melbourne has rain and Australia has big skin cancer? i'm sorry i actually care about my skin unlike you getting wrinkles in your thirties that make you look 20 years older than you really are. how about you try and eating on a birdpoo stained table when its 35 degress. just build a cafeteria indoors for eating. if you were really trying to promote outdoor activity then make a playground and more open grassy spaces. not dust covered-rock-hard-asphalt. i'm tired of going into the primary-school-sized library and literally not being able to borrow a book because there are kids everywhere sitting down eating.
Overall I hate Balwyn high but it works I guess

No character building, no attention to individual needs.

The school is good but it could be better if they pay attention to the people who need help and not on the people who don't need the help at all

To the parent who made a comment on 12 Sep. What do you expect when these kids were called ugly wogs and Asians? Turn the other cheek? How would you feel if your child was called like that? Is it in our control to be born in a certain race? No. But it's in our control to behave ourselves and treat others with respect, the way we want to be treated. If we insult people, we will be insulted in return. They might be Asians and other races but they are human beings and have feelings.
By Parent - 29 Oct 2015, Rate: excellent
Of course that's what you get when you insult these kids and call them ugly Wogs and Asians. The worst bullies, worst criminals and mixed up people so on in Australia are white! Is it their gene? Who knows?
By Parent - 08 Oct 2015, Rate: excellent
Top school. If you don't want your child being bullied, send them to a more multicultural school. Bullying is a part of white Australian culture. It's at schools, at work places, in politics, etc..

Based on comment by student on 26 June 2014, does not look like a school with the right culture.

As you know Balwyn High school is known to be a excellent public school along with Box Hill High School, University High School, Mc Kinnon and more however I believe Balwyn is overated and there overall academics is not outstanding or extraordinary as shown by their naplan mark. Just because their vce rank is good it does not prove there overall academic is good

Although having a large emphasis on academic achievements, it fails horribly at other aspects of Schooling, I feel it fails to develop character and personal development in students. The Schools main focus is to do well for its year 12 cohort and very much scrutinises kids who fall behind/or have learning disabilities. Kids who graduate from Balwyn, although possibly with great marks, fail at enriching the life skills needed to become the best individual they can be. As an ex student I have seen the extent past students are struggling to make there mark and be the best they can be. Value your education more than just school marks, if not go to balwyn.
