|This school is a terrible school that quite honestly hinders your overall VCE performance. Do not be fooled by the fact that Melbourne High School has a high VCE ATAR median because that ATAR median would honestly be much higher if all the students in MHS actually went to another normal school where they get an even playing field with others. Allow me to explain. |
Not only are students not allowed to take a unit 1 and 2 subject that isn't music in year 10 which every other secondary school allows, but the students are also constantly pressured into doing co-curricular activity. While this can be a good thing, it isn't when they're shoved upon students against their will excessively. If students do not get the necessary diploma point total (you get diploma from co-curricular activities e.g. 1 from book club), students are not allowed to graduate wth a diploma, thus the "optional" co-curricular activities doesn't even feel "optional" anymore and is rather a burden.
Students are also constantly fed with the idea that Melbourne high school is "the most prestigious and most successful government school" (literally stated in an assembly) despite the fact that half our classrooms do not have proper technology or air conditioning in the summer as a matter of fact.
Being conservative within Melbourne High School is also looked down upon and political values are shamelessly and unprofessionally shoved upon students by some teachers during class time. Do not be surprised if your son starts Melbourne High School a supporter of the liberal party of Australia and come out a strong supporter of the labor party cause that has already happened to students I know.
The fact that the ex-school captain of MHS has himself spoken about how he's "lost faith in Melbourne High School" should be a testimony to the fact that something is horribly wrong with this school's environment. Melbourne High School may have once been a great school, "the castle on the hill" as they call it, but now its more like the facade on the hill.
While there are some decent teachers in MHS, there's a good portion that can hardly teach properly and much less, do a good job of it.
If you want a better future for your kid, don't make the same mistake I made and leave your old school to go to this school.

|in terms of what the school offers in - exchanges, co-curricular activities and clubs - the school is truly unique and the best. however in terms of actual teaching, most of the teachers your child will have are lacking and your son will be forced to learn everything on his own instead of in the classroom. every year there are problems with the school which are instead ignored by the school in order to uphold their prestigious reputation. |
