My child switched from a public school to mater dei, and was previously having trouble with her reading and sight words but had caught up prior to transferring. I explained this to her teacher and asked for communication if there were any concerns, so that I could provide extra support at home. I didn’t know my child had fallen below the expected level for reading, only upon opening her report card, sent over the Christmas holidays. I have since switched my child back to her previous public school, where they have immediately put her on an intensive learning pathway to bring her back up to speed. I do not blame mater dei for my child taking a little extra time to pick up and apply the concepts of reading (she is 6) but I am very disappointed at the schools emphasis on parental networking and student mixers, over an emphasis on education and parent communication. If you want to network, send your child to a private school, if you want your child to learn, the public school around the corner might be a better fit, even if it’s missing the funding and the ‘shiny’ facilities.
