STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
St Paul's Church St Leonards is an unusual vertical weatherboard building in the Victorian Carpenter Gothic style dating from c1850's. The church was moved from its original location and has had several additions but is in good condition. It may be a model of one of the Victorian Carpenter Gothic designs provided by the Ecclesiological Society in England. This Society encouraged the development of timber church architecture in the South pacific Region.
St Paul's is of social, scientific and historic value to the Bellarine Penninsula and the local St Leonards community.
St Paul's was described by the Bellarine Herald (14/11/96) as one of the oldest churches on the Peninsula. Originally called Christ Church located at the corner of Church Road and the Portarlington-Geelong Road, East Bellarine it was thought to have been brought out to Geelong ballast in the early days of settlement. After serving the farming and fishing families of the Bellarine area it was moved by wagon in 1915 to St Leonards and dedicated as St Paul's Church of England (Bellarine Herald 24/12/15). It has also been used by other denominations for services and is presently used by the Anglican and Uniting Churches. One of the 'moving' buildings of the Peninsula, St Paul's has been an important place for the worship and social life of two communities for almost 150 years. It is scientific value as it has good potential for research into the construction techniques and materials which may be prefabricated and designed according to the principles of the Ecclesiological Society.
It is of Local significance.
