Why this school has so bad reviews?
We live at Altona Meadows and as a parent of a child starting high school next year, I am very concerned about enrolling my son at the Laverton College. Our children should be given equal opportunities especially when it comes about education.

Not academically competitive but rather loud, foul-mouthed and toxic students. Don't go there if you don't want to see students vaping and smoking. At least the teachers tried their best to support their students but still, they are unmotivated and want some more freetime. Instead of wearing PROPER school uniform they are wearing sports shorts and hoodies that are not the dress code. They can't even stay for one day without cussing. Some even sneak mobile phones to school to listen to music and the worst thing is that I have never seen teachers confiscating them! But the vice principal always ring it in our heads that there should be no phones in school grounds.
Conclusion, do not think about enrolling in this school because its a bad influence to good students. Laverton should do better!!

Cons:
I'd be lying if I said this school is good academically, there is literally no place you can eat and study without it being loud or windy. It feels like it's either starve yourself or study like you're on a roller coaster.
The offset is that no one here really cares about education so I guess it's good for most of the students; students are loud, out of class, disobedient and disrespectful to those who actually want to succeed in their studies.
This school isn't for high achievers, that's for sure. Albeit a few years ago you could say this school was decent in terms of behaviour, but now it is a literally war zone. I've had year 7's offer me stolen markers, limes thrown at me and the majority of "bad students" are almost certain to influence those who do want to do well into a life just as sinister.
Also if you/your child has a weak bladder it'll be difficult for them since most toilets are broken every week. Tampons, blood, tissues inside the toilet, broken soap dispensers on the floor, you name it.
Pros:
If you are inherently smart, hard working and resilient to the peer pressure of your unruly cohort, you'll be constantly topping your class (in my experience anyways). With similar peers of 5-ish students, the confidence gained from the years will do you well in your studies. You'll be encouraged to work harder and smarter, but the majority of your time effectively studying will be at home (Studying for about 2 hours a day in year 10 because the teacher couldn't get through a singer chapter without the class disrupting).
It's different once you get to VCE though, the unit 1/2 and 3/4 teachers are phenomenal to say the least. They work extremely hard and are willing to give their all for our success. Not only are their teaching skills exemplary, their attitudes towards the work and students help shape us to be the best we can, though I must say that for those who are behind it will be hard to catch up unless you get some sort of tutoring.
If you enter this school at VCE level, granted you come from a school where year 10-prep wasn't horrible, you'll be pretty solid. Otherwise the disadvantage of being a pre VCE student here will be critical in your potential education.
There are also a lot of resources here, like 3 labs (physics, chemistry and biology mostly) and numerous apparatus that most schools don't have access too.
SUMMARY
Don't go here if you care about your education.
Go here if you plan to do VCAL, drop out or finish VCE with around a 50 atar.
For school officials:
What can you do?
Establish a place where students can eat and study quietly that is inside (Inspire building?)
Stricter with punishments (seriously the kid who threw a lime at me got off with a talking to).
Establish rules better (especially year 11 teachers). For example, lack of diary entries for 'toilet breaks' is probably why no one can pinpoint the culprit of these toilet massacres.
STREAM CLASSES, PLEASE! Not by established skill level, but separate those who clearly want to succeed against those who don't care. The problem is the ones who care are being dragged down by trouble makers. Stream classes and I guarantee there will be improved school results.
Stream classes.
Students who want to do well:
Separate yourself from bad people. You get into a bad friend group it's pretty much over, stay with the smarts is what I was told.
Talk to your teachers for extensions, extra work or revision.
Do not be over confident, you may think you're a topper in year 10 but in year 11 it's a whole different ball game. Do your 10A work and prepare for year 11.
Do not go too ahead, you may be fast but at the end of the day the class will catch up to you, instead use that extra time to revise (get worksheets or use an alternative text book).
ATARNOTES is amazing.
Avoid getting overly attached to anyone (work or school) it'll most likely than not screw you over.
Ask the RIGHT senior kids for tips.
