For many years, the staffroom seem to be a retirement waiting room or of having groups of young stressed staff desperately looking for transfers. As a young local parent I researched the local schools and was told by several "I wouldn't send my dog there'. I was encouraged by no one to do so. I was even told this by teachers.
As a primary teacher myself, I noted that parents of year 7 students would at often great cost and inconvenience, send their children to Birdwood, Mt Barker or Adelaide rather than OAS. There were some parents of "challenging students" who just didn't care. As a teacher I would watch so many cars drive past OAS loaded with children going to other schools rather than Oakbank. Yet OAS has a beautiful environment and is ideally situated. Potentially it could have been well resourced. It could be a great school if it had a strong focus, consistent wise leadership and the positive support of the community.
There are indeed many reasons for the mediocrity and and it is not just the school's fault, or the greater community, or the government's but rather a combination all and a lack of motivation to change. Oakbank Agricultural High School was its former name and that is a reputation which is difficult to shake. If you enquire of older locals what OAS is all about, you will still get responses mentioning egg sorting, poultry raising, and growing sweet corn.
As I said, it was like this in 1975 and still the community has its attitude. When will this school ever reach for and achieve its potential?
