May Villa
Built in 1880 by the Galvin Family and at a time when the area was known as Galvin Town, May Villa represents a stunning example of Victorian architecture and would arguably be one of the most beautiful homes in the area. Launcestons inner south is a largely intact area of heritage homes, many of which are now also being lovingly restored as the area becomes increasingly appreciated and sought after.
Despite being built very well, May Villa had lost her shine and was in need of a full renovation when the owners purchased her in 2007. They went about the mammoth task of returning this iconic home to its former glory, respecting and honouring the character and heritage, while also creating a contemporary home for modern living. Over the next ten years and with the help of local experts, family and friends, this home is now a testament to what can be accomplished with love, vision and perseverance.
From the beautifully restored street frontage to the back, the owners have created a highly liveable and spacious family home, full of light, indoor-outdoor living and creative touches. Original features, including the marble and slate veranda, marble mantles, ornate cornices and ceiling roses, coloured glass and dados have been retained and restored.
The 2014-15 kitchen-living and third bedroom extension adds a whole new dimension to the home, featuring a contemporary kitchen with bespoke myrtle joinery and natural floorboards, it is sun-filled but also has a wood-heater for the colder months. The kitchen-dining-living area opens up on all sides and compliments the gorgeous outdoor entertaining area enjoyed under the green canopy of the gardens established trees.
