"HISTORICAL MAUD COTTAGE” (1874) PRIME LOCATION REDUCED TO SELL
This handmade brick cottage has a history from the original Forest Creek gold rush, and is located in the centre of where it all happened.
Governor Macquarie was responsible for the original crown giants of land to the citizens in 1851 and the land where this cottage has rested for the past 125 years was granted to a Mr. Allen.
Council rate records show that the land was vacant until it was bought by a Mr Goldsmith in 1876-77 when he constructed the cottage and rented it to a Mr A. W. Maud whose occupation was clerk.
Also appears from the records that the tenant paid the council rates and that the property at the time was valued at 16 pounds which was a little more than surrounding cottages – one would therefore assume it was quite a special cottage in that era.
However, the rates were cut to 10 pounds, and one wonders if Mr Maud in his working capacity had any influence over the rate collector or if a complaint was lodged regarding the valuation of the property.
On Sep 9th in Mt Alexander mail there was an item of news that Mr Goldsmith the owner of the property had died at the age of 69 years. The article read’ one of the earliest settlers and best known residents of Castlemaine Mr Goldsmith died yesterday morning at about 9 ‘o’clock. In the very early days he commenced business as a storekeeper and dealer in Forest Street, but afterwards moved to market square where he continued trading and made money so quickly that he built a hotel.
