I attended the school from 2013-2016. From what, I know there has been a change in leadership and the new principal is one of the few teachers who actually cared about me and treated me as somebody who could contribute something to the world. But, for all I know a lot of this school could be the same.
Basically, I was horrendously bullied. When I came in year 3, other students in my year were calling me the R slur. In year 5, the same two boys would tease me day after day after day. The next year, two new year 5 boys did the same thing. Girls would exclude me and manipulate me into doing stupid things.
The teachers hardly helped. Miss Howarth (I think that's her name) and Miss Timms (who a lot of people seem to dislike) were the only two teachers who actually saw my potential. The other teachers would not let me do sports, do debating or even run for school captain. Sure, those are selective things, but the school did not select students based on their ability, but rather were very biased. They held try outs every year for the sports, but would only ever pick the same students as previous years. Year 6 would automatically get picked, but the school would not admit it. After trying out for the debating team in year 5 and failing, I lost all my self esteem. Sure, I wasn't good at sports, but not being good at this either made me feel like I wasn't good at anything. The school was far too competitive, especially for a primary school. They also did not let me run for school captain because there were too many people running and they did not want to sit through so many speeches, so they picked a few off. After being picked off, Miss Howarth told me I should be in the IT team. Sure, I was in the IT team but this one boy would be the only boy who would do anything and the school did not bother to let us take turns.
I used to think that the school did not notice these issues, but they must've really. I feel like the bullying should have been really obvious if the same kids were doing it every day.
Anyway, I still cry sometimes about how this school messed me up, wrecked my self confidence, made me think I was worthless. The bias the teachers had towards students was astounding. I was so excited to start highschool, never to think about this dump every again.

We were warned about the poor performance of this school by local Doctors in the area and should have listened.
We pulled our two boys by year 4 and transferred them to Rose Bay Public & the difference is night and day. We just wish we had done so sooner.
Where to begin?
The headmistress is well past retirement, constantly ill & barely there... yet all the other teachers protect her position for fear of getting a replacement who would not let them run their own lazy agendas... it is literally a school run by the teachers for the teachers... the kids are an annoying afterthought and are frequently made to feel this. The culture of bullying starts near the top (the headmistress is never there & shows little concern in addressing it). Such a shame as there are a handful of lovely, well intentioned teachers who are subjugated by the staffroom politics.
The only reason the school holds up half decently in naplan is thanks to the affluent demographic. Most children have tutors by year 3 to compensate.
In terms of technology the school is dragging so far behind to the point it is non-compliant with DOE ICT standards. The kids dont even know how to save a file by year 5, let alone create one. The teachers Are not kept current with current, standardized teaching methodologies.
There is a floating ‘teacher’ called Mrs Diane Timms mentioned in multiple reviews below whom a previous reviewer notes, never actually finished her teacher training which explains why she is never assigned an actual class. Her title alternates between ‘special learning teacher’ to ‘assistant deputy headmistress’ which makes no sense given her lack of credentials. Rumour is she is best mates with the ever absent principal... both clearly protecting eachothers backs.
Regardless, the last thing this woman should be doing is teaching students with learning difficulties, when she isnt even qualified to teach those without. Even with the ‘special leaners” he is outright abusive to the children, constantly belittling, degrading & shouting at them in front of their peers to humilate & shame them. The kids absolutely hate her, And no wonder, she is on an abusive power trip. How this woman still has a job at the school is likely down to the fact that parents become so frustrated, as in our families case, that they just leave knowing it’s a futile battle trying to get anything addressed between the absent headmistress and shield of enablers she has hired to protect herself.
The P&C is skeletal and run by the same well-intentioned but unsupported 5-6 parents from the lower grades. The parents literally sign out in the older years knowing any effort is futile and this is reflected in the low fundraising capability and lack of real community amongst the parents.
Until there is a change of leadership and a complete overhaul of her grifters amongst the teaching staff, do everything you can not to enroll your children here, your kids will have to work hard to catch up to their peers when they leave.
Such a shame that such formative years are squandered at what should be such a rich & dynamic school.
Amongst the kids its a dobbing culture in which they are unwittingly pitted against eachother to curry favour with their teachers.
I wish I could endorse some positives for the school that go beyond the schools location right by the water in Duble Bay, but sadly am clutching at straws to think of a single benefit.

This school is diabolical. They do not know how to deal with bullying. They have an approach to education and respect of students that at best is lazy and at worst just ignorant of what is needed in a modern world to ensure that children are raised to respect each other and that anti social behaviours should not be tolerated. Most of the children appear to be in a holding pattern to attend a better private school or sadly have little choice but to tolerate this below average school.

I have had my three children attending Double Bay Primary. Two of them still attending and loving it. As a parent I have only praise for the dedication the teachers have for their students' education. I would highly recommend the school as a caring and dynamic place for learning.

Unfortunately I sent my son here because it was our local school. The headmistress was incompetently protective of teachers about whom I complained, teachers who were either incompetent, or outright malicious. The situation came to my attention via another parent whose child was reporting on classroom proceedings and thought I should know about the vicious treatment my son was receiving from a teacher I note is mentioned in another review on this website. I remember one of the parents was so appalled by the culture of the school and the elitist, just-plain-bad-manners that some of the parents embodied and passed onto their children, that he removed his children and started a 'kindness' movement. If something good has come of this situation, then I am glad. Of course there are some kind and hardworking teachers at the school too, but they don't stand a chance against the culture of bullying, and the general lack of emotional intelligence or will to do anything about it that pervades the school. An example of how the school was trying, but failing to understand what was required for lasting change, was when they introduced restorative justice into the school. It's a decent idea, but the staff were not properly trained, and to be used effectively, it needs a very high level of mediator skill. Instead, my child was put with a bunch of children who were bullying him, and the teacher said, "you're all old enough to do this yourselves now," and left them to it. No, actually, at 9 years old they were not old enough, untrained, and the session turned into another occasion for bullying, while the school got to 'tick the boxes' for taking action.

My miserable six years at Double Bay Public School were by far the worst experience of my life. Not only was I verbally, and at one point, physically, abused by a specific teacher throughout all these years, but the education I recieved was unfathomably horrendous. The worst aspect of the school, apart from the disgusting education I recieved, was the teachers. They were soulless, cruel, and I'd even go as far as to say they were evil. The entire school is absolute trash. DO NOT send your children here. I beg of you. DON'T DO IT. Oh, and by the way, Diane Timms, you told me that I would never amount to anything in year 3, right? Well guess what? I just won first in my year in English. And I believe you have still yet to complete a full teaching degree in university, despite the fact that you're about 70 years old and on your deathbed? Hmm, interesting.
