St Pauls is a pleasant little school located in a nice rural environment. My first impressions, St Pauls was punching above its weight and one which would offer a child a kind and nurturing environment, especially if they were at risk socially. Boarding on the face of things looked as though it would offer a true home away from home and the children would get a good level of pastoral and welfare care.
On first impressions St Pauls is staffed with a pleasant mix of experienced and young enthusiastic teachers (some maybe a tad young), friendly students (the ones who showed us around were lovely) and enthusiastic child welfare staff. Academically that staff are good, they are motivated, give great feedback and seem to genuinely bring good skills to the table that they impart on students in the classroom.
However, after a few months I became very disappointed especially with the welfare offered. Although nice enough at first, it did become obvious that welfare staffs were drastically underqualified for their roles, boarding staff were thin on the ground for the number of students in residence and the number of “questionable” students who seemed to be admitted with really bad behaviour was very disconcerting.
Academically I rate St Pauls 3.5/5. From a welfare perspective I rate the school 1.5/5. Good little day school for the money, but don’t bother with boarding.
